3 Resume Fails

3 Resume Fails

Can you think of 3 resume fails? Writing a resume that gets you noticed and represents you in a way that will get you hired can be difficult. Many people don’t realize that what they think will help them, actually hurts them. The following are 3 common resume fails:

  • Including Your GPA – there is no need to include your GPA, you’re not applying for school. Unless you have a 4.0, including your GPA on your resume gives someone the opportunity to think you’re not perfect and wonder what class you didn’t do well in. Also, most people realize that a GPA isn’t always representative of your intelligence and has absolutely nothing to do with your work experience or capabilities. Your GPA, just doesn’t matter!
  • Identifying Your Age – identifying your age gives someone the opportunity to think you are either too young or too old. By showing youth, they can think you’re too inexperienced and underqualified. By showing maturity in age, they can think you’re not going to have relevant insight and won’t be able to keep up with the pace of the company.  There is no need to list when you went to school, as that illustrates your age. Your age can also be shown depending on how many jobs you list, which is why we at the Law and Management Resource Center will customize your resume for you so you can avoid this common resume fail.
  • Your Picture – by including your picture, you give someone the opportunity to deny you the position based on your age, race, ethnicity, or sex. Your picture tells it all. By including this information, if you don’t get the job, you might have it in the back of your mind that you didn’t get the job because of one of those factors. Why take all that risk?

If you would like to have your resume and cover letter edited or created by an experienced, MBA consultant, contact Jillian Bruni, MBA at jillian@lmrcenter.com for an affordable quote!

Effective Email Marketing

effective email marketing, mass marketing tips, email tips

Presenting yourself and your organization in a way that gets someone’s attention through email can be a very difficult and time consuming process. Often, you don’t even know if anyone is reading your email. So, how can you make email marketing work for you? The following 3 tips can help you make an impact and stand out from all those other emails:

  1. Ask questions – by asking questions your audience can relate to, it makes the email recipient feel a connection, like the email is directed toward them, not just a mass message to everyone (e.g., if you are selling flowers, ask “What’s your favorite flower?”);
  2. Keep it short – people check their email on their phone, at the office, while commuting, while they’re bored, when they’re not really interested in reading a full page of information. By keeping it short, you have a better chance of the email recipient actually reading the whole email. Bullet points are your friend!;
  3. Specific rewards for actions – if people know exactly what they will get from doing what you ask of them, they will be more inclined to act. If there is no call to action, there is no sense of urgency to act and most people need to feel that push in order to actually act. If there is no reward for following that call to action, there is no benefit for the email recipient.
